Ms Marvel #5

Ms Marvel #5 is yet another strong issue in a line-up that continues to make me laugh, raise an eyebrow and relate with the characters that it so pleasantly conveys. In a world that so eagerly desires more diversity in pop culture, this a comic that everybody should definitely be reading. It also continues to be rich in Islamic slice of life scenarios, without getting preachy on any levels. And while this issue still provides insight into the culture itself, it feels more like a single chapter in a filler arc without being stale; Furthering one of the funniest, craziest, most random storylines I’ve ever read in a comic that’s not trying to break the fourth wall.

The story picks up straight off of #4 (Obviously) where we found out that Aamir wishes to get married and that Kamala has made the clearly bad mistake of reproducing Loki’s golems to look like her, before they suddenly start sprouting all over the lab. However while the story focuses on both of these plots, it’s the latter that shines because of how G. Willow Wilson expertly pivots the complication without involving Kamala, hence giving her family room for a bit of character development in this issue. But… since this is Ms. Marvel; Kamala’s also has to get a bit of panel time herself, and it good stuff. In fact it’s really fun stuff. And If I say anything else about her clone problem I’ll spoil it probably spoil it but it’s going in great direction, so I can’t wait for the next issue.

Just like with the last issue Nico Leon’s art is great stuff and I genuinely hope he’ll be a regular to the series, as he works wonders with Wilson. He’s able to shift between cartoony scenarios (like the Ninjas wearing Crocs), realistic family interactions, and often has both at once, which really fits with the story telling. Pay extra attention to detail and you may even find Easter eggs as usual.

I’d usually give fillers a BORROW but since it was so entertaining this issue gets a 4/5 from me.

It’s a Buy.
